Hi there —

We’re so glad you are here.

At Drawingroom, we are a small, passionate design studio that loves working with non-profits, health care, and marginalized communities to bring meaningful digital experiences to life. We team up with likeminded professionals to build thoughtful, inclusive websites and apps that do more than just meet WCAG 2.0 standards; they genuinely welcome everyone in.

Accessibility improvements for neurodivergent users

Designing for neurodivergence isn’t a niche concern—it’s a driver of smarter, more human-centered experiences. By reducing cognitive load, we not only empower neurodivergent users but also improve usability for first-time visitors, elders, and anyone navigating a site under stress or unfamiliar conditions.

Trans Care BC

TransCareBC.ca is a supportive and affirming space which authentically represents Two-Spirit, transgender and non-binary individuals. This website and identity redesign aims to bridge gaps in representation, provide relevant resources, and ensure that the user experience fosters dignity, respect, and empowerment for all users.

Challenge

TransCareBC’s redesign focused on inclusive representation, accessible resources, and a user experience rooted in dignity and empowerment.

Approach

I began with research and open discussion to understand the needs and expectations of community members and SMEs. I listened to pain points with previous design and based on those insights, I developed a new comprehensive Design System, worked with the UX lead to support neurodivergent visitors, and provided creative direction to various teams. As needs arose and timelines loomed I took on additional responsibilities, including Drupal development, CSS, UX support and Illustration.

Solutions

We launched an accessible website and Design System centered on accessibility and neurodivergent inclusion. Our team developed interactive tools like the Hormone Timeline, transforming complex, linear content into intuitive visuals that support lateral thinking.

Impact

The redesign strengthened community identity and user trust while delivering a calmer, more intuitive interface. Visitors praised the visual clarity, noting it helped them navigate resources and understand care pathways more easily. Neurodivergent users felt recognized in a space tailored to their needs, and the drop in health navigation support requests reflected a more self-sufficient, empowered user experience.

Challenge

The Inclusive Workplace is Canada’s first website tailored to support autistic and intellectually disabled individuals in finding meaningful employment and navigating the workplace. Developed ahead of broad public awareness, it exceeded WCAG 2.0 AA standards by thoughtfully addressing the unique needs of neurodivergent users.

Approach

Through one-on-one interviews with our ASD and ID target audiences, we uncovered their challenges in gaining meaningful employment. People with Autism Spectrum Disorder or an Intellectual disability are some of the most under-employed people in Canada; We made sure to recognize that people with Autism Spectrum Disorder or an intellectual disability also had other challenges, such as poverty, access to technology, access to support.

Solutions

We introduced systems that supported linear processing while giving lateral thinkers clear access to both high-level overviews and detailed content for contextual understanding. A desaturated visual mode was designed for users sensitive to color, softening the impact of the inherited brand palette. To enhance usability, we streamlined steps and integrated visual icons that intuitively guided expected actions.
